Image Series: Small Animals

Cartoon OwlI’m always trying to create new image collections for my Series & Collections category. This isn’t a new series, but it’s still a great one.

The series is called Small Animals. Can you guess what’s in this series? Did you guess small animals? If you did, you are right. When you stop doing you’re “I’m a genius!” dance, feel free to go check out the collection. There are a lot of fun images in it.

Google Easter Eggs

Cartoon Easter EggAccording my best friend, Wikipedia, an Easter egg is…

An Easter egg is an intentional hidden message, inside joke, or feature in a work such as a computer program, movie, book, or crossword.

Well, Google likes to hide Easter eggs in their searches, and I happened upon one the other day when I was doing a search. So strap yourself in and type “do a barrel roll” into the search box. Have fun and happy Easter!

Drawing Tips: Print and Retrace

Print FileThis probably goes hand in hand with my light table drawing tip. Sometimes it is easier to scan a drawing into Photoshop or Illustrator, make small changes or adjustments, then print it out again to retrace.

Not every sketch has to be perfect the first time. Keep redrawing  and reprinting it until it looks right.

Image Series: Cartoon Animals

Cartoon ZebraI’m always trying to create new image collections for my Series & Collections category. This isn’t a new series, but it’s still a great one.

The series is called Cartoon Animals. This is one of my oldest collections, so I considered it a classic. Hey, people like the classics though. Classic movies, classic cars and, of course, classic zebras. They have classic zebra conventions, right?

Anyway, check out the series and get your tickets for the classic zebra convention early. They sell out fast.

Illustration Friday Topic: Eye Glasses

Cartoon NerdThis week’s Illustration Friday topic was Eye Glasses. I decided to go with this nerdy guy multitasking. At least, I think he is multitasking. Come to think of it, he doesn’t really look like he is getting anything done. Oh well.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator. As usual, you can purchase this file as a Royalty Free vector file or see a larger more detailed version here.

Google Doodle: A Behind the Scenes Look

womens_day_2013-1055007-hpOK. This is a little bit more of school pride. Google’s newest Doodle team member, Betsy Bauer, is a Ringling alumni. That’s where I went to school too.

Congrats to her. Unfortunately, I’ll have to let my Aunt know that Betsy stole my spot on the team. Kidding. You can see her working on a recent Doodle for Women’s Day 2013 in this CBS “behind the scenes” video. Check it out!

Drawing Tips: Doodle Page

Doodle PageIf you ever sit next to me on a plane, then you will see me filling up an 8.5″ x 11″ page with a variety of little characters and doodles. You’ll also see me slugging down a Jack Daniel’s with Coke, but that’s probably not important.

Anyway, I find creating a page full of doodles and trying to fill every inch of it is a great way to come up with new ideas and have a little fun in the process. It also does a good job of killing a long plane flight, but so does the Jack Daniel’s.

A Look at the Comic Book Industry from a Veteran

Jerry OrdwayI recently read this story on comic book artist Jerry Ordway’s blog . He basically tells his story of illustrating in the comic book industry for 30 years. Stories like this always make me sad because I know how many years of work go into creating great images (even silly little cartoons like mine). So to see another artist’s work be undervalued and under appreciated, it gets under my skin. Plus, like every other kid, I grew up loving comic books and cartoons.

I hope this isn’t what is in store for all of us as we become veterans in our industry because I have no plans of stopping illustrating anytime soon. Regardless, go check out the story.

Image Series: Little Animals

Cartoon Tiger CubI’m always trying to create new image collections for my Series & Collections category. This isn’t a new series, but it’s still a great one. The series is called Little Animals.

I was on an animal kick last year. No, I don’t mean that I ate bacon wrapped turduckens morning, noon and night. Although, that sounds delicious. I mean that I drew a lot of cartoon animals. This series was part of that kick, so enjoy the animal drawing spectacular!
